Maya H. Pack, MS, MPA

Executive Director

Ms. Pack has been working to support improved health and health care in South Carolina since 1998. She has distinguished herself through work across the state and at the local level. As Executive Director of the South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health, Ms. Pack works with the Board of Directors to provide vision and strategic direction to the Institute and oversees the organization’s operations.

Kester S. Freeman, Jr.

Senior Advisor

Mr. Freeman is the retired founding Chief Executive Officer of Palmetto Health, the largest integrated healthcare delivery system in South Carolina. Palmetto Health includes a regional teaching hospital and tertiary center, two acute care hospitals, a heart hospital, a children’s hospital and a psychiatric hospital. He was the founding executive director and served in that roll from 2011 until 2020.

Yair Centeno

Operations Manager

Mr. Centeno brings over eight years of experience in the operations, business and accounting fields to IMPH. In his role as Operations Manager, Mr. Centeno leads office operations, financial and board governance for IMPH in partnership with the Executive Director. He also works in developing the annual budget, monitoring compliance with grant requirements and preparing project budgets for grant proposals. Mr. Centeno also plans, coordinates and performs administrative and support activities.

Karina C. Howell, MS

Health Equity Manager

Karina C. Howell serves as the Health Equity Manager for the South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health. In her role, Ms. Howell brings Diversity, Equity and Inclusion expertise to IMPH’s work and performs data analysis and writing, editing and content development for the Health Policy Fellows Programs and Institute taskforces.

Brie Hunt, M.Ed.

Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives

As Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives at the South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health, Ms. Hunt leads the development and implementation of multi-stakeholder taskforces aimed at improving population health and health care delivery for South Carolinians. Ms. Hunt also leads innovative strategies, fund development, evaluation and research at the Institute. Ms. Hunt joined IMPH in 2018 and brings in-depth experience in population health, policy, government and public affairs to the Institute.

Hunter Sox

Legislative Initiatives Coordinator

Mr. Sox brings more than three years of comprehensive knowledge of policy development, government relations and strategic communications to IMPH. In his role as Legislative Initiatives Coordinator, Mr. Sox represents IMPH with members of the General Assembly, their staff and other elected officials to increase the institute’s visibility and credibility as the go-to resource for nonpartisan information to inform health policy.


Current Open Position: Research & Policy Manager, $60,000 - $65,000

The IMPH Research & Policy Manager will research and write policy papers and taskforce reports. The individual in this role should be a talented writer who can interpret complex health policy issues and translate them for any audience. The candidate should be comfortable with writing reports related to a variety of health topics, meeting facilitation and working collaboratively with a team to support emerging organizational needs.

A bachelor’s degree in public health or related field with at least five years of relevant work experience is required. A master’s degree is preferred. All degrees must be conferred from a college, university or institution of higher education recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
