SC Institute of Medicine and Public Health Announces New Executive Director
Previous Associate Executive Director Maya Pack appointed effective July 1, 2020
COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 9, 2020) — The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health (IMPH) is proud to announce the appointment of Maya Pack as its new executive director, effective July 1, 2020. IMPH is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with the mission to collectively inform policy to improve the health and well-being of all South Carolinians.
In her new role, Pack works with the board of directors to provide vision and strategic direction to the institute and oversees daily operations.
Pack joined IMPH in 2009. Prior to her appointment as executive director, she served as the associate executive director, co-director and associate director. Pack graduated from Furman University and holds a Master of Applied Sociology from Clemson University and a Master of Public Administration focused on health care and nonprofit leadership from Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. She is a 2019 Riley Fellow through the Diversity Leaders Initiative with The Riley Institute at Furman.
“Maya has provided essential guidance and leadership to IMPH for more than a decade, and we are thrilled to have her take on the role of executive director,” says IMPH board chair and former president of the University of South Carolina, Dr. Harris Pastides. “She brings to the role a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience that is unmatched. Maya has over 20 years of experience in health care and has served in countless leadership roles during that time. She will lead IMPH in optimizing existing programs while working with partners and funders to further expand our role in improving the health of South Carolinians through informed policy.”
Pack began her career in 1998 with the United Way of Greenville County, performing community needs assessments. In the early 2000s, she worked in planning and market research for the Greenville Health System and then worked for Bon Secours St. Francis Health System as the director of planning. She has also consulted for a number of nonprofit and health care organizations in the Upstate of South Carolina in the areas of strategic and business planning, needs assessment, outcome measurement and grant writing. Between 2006 and 2008, Pack served as manager of the South Carolina Business Coalition on Health, where she developed and implemented programs and policies to improve the quality of health care while controlling its cost for the business community.
Pack currently serves on the board of directors of Mental Health America of Greenville County, the leadership team of the Alliance for a Healthier South Carolina, the AccessHealth SC Advisory Council, the South Carolina Overdose Prevention Project Advisory Council, the executive committee of the South Carolina Behavioral Health Coalition and the Healthy Palmetto Leadership Council. She is a graduate of Leadership Greenville (2006), Furman University’s Women Leadership Program (2009) and is a member of the Blue Ridge Institute for Nonprofit Leaders.

I am eager to continue to work with the excellent team at IMPH to support the residents of South Carolina,” says Pack.
Pack follows Founding Executive Director Kester Freeman Jr., who will now serve as a senior advisor for IMPH.
“Maya’s in-depth experience and history of leadership at IMPH will assure that she will continue to be an asset to our organization and to the people of South Carolina. We have worked together over the last nine years to build a foundation that I believe will lead to strategies and policies that will have a significant impact on improving the health status of the residents of our state. During these challenging times for health care and public health, we need leaders who can improve our public health effectiveness, impact and preparedness. I look forward to continuing to support Maya and the institute in the future,” says Freeman.
