As open enrollment for Affordable Care Act coverage is set to start on Saturday, more than 630,000 South Carolinians are at risk of seeing their health insurance premiums double due to subsidies not being renewed in Washington.
In states that use Healthcare.gov, including South Carolina, people are seeing their premiums rise by an average of 300%. Around 95% of South Carolinians who are insured receive a subsidy.
If congress doesn’t come to an agreement, those subsidies will be expiring at the end of the year.
