Rural Health Policy Fellows

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health, in partnership with the South Carolina Office of Rural Health, hosted six one-day local Health Policy Fellows Programs in Williamsburg, Dillon, Darlington, Lee, Barnwell and Georgetown counties in 2023.

The Health Policy Fellows Program is a signature program of IMPH and advances the mission of the Institute, to collectively inform policy to improve health and health care in South Carolina. IMPH serves as an informed nonpartisan convener and educator for policymakers and community leaders and facilitates conversation about policy decisions that impact the health and well-being of our residents.
Through these sessions, IMPH helps policymakers and key stakeholders engage in deliberative dialogue about health inequities facing South Carolina’s rural communities. The IMPH team focused on three learning objectives.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

An awareness of the social and environmental determinants of health.

An understanding of racial inequities in health and well-being measures and how the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated vulnerabilities and inequities.

Development of ideas to address health equity through policy action at the county and/or municipal level.

Rural Health Toolkit

South Carolina’s rural communities experience a unique set of health issues. Continuing our Health Policy Fellows Program, we have identified critical public health concerns in the six participating counties. This toolkit has been developed to provide rural communities with information and relevant data to engage with appointed and elected officials on the county level to develop policy solutions for health issues. The policy briefs are for community members who want information about public health concerns. This toolkit is a great way to start talking to decision-makers about possible solutions. We have outlined strategies that you can use to engage and inform your policymakers about issues that concern your community.
