IMPH Cohosting TeleVideoconference with SC Academy of Physician Assistants

On April 8th, 2015 the South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health, in conjunction with several partners including the South Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (SCAPA), will host the “A How-To for South Carolina PA’s: Communities & Practices Join the Obesity Fight” videoconference.  Supported by the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, this teleconference will discuss several topics including the 2015 County Health Rankings, the South Carolina SCale Down Initiative and the Let’s GO 5-2-1-0! Childhood Obesity Toolkit.  During the live video event, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about each individual topic.

Currently in South Carolina, 13.9% of high school students are obese and 21.5% of children ages 10-17 are obese.  This event is an effort to educate and inspire our state’s physicians assistants to join in the fight against childhood obesity.  Attendees of the event will learn the social and environmental influences that impact a person’s health, explain the demographics of obesity, link social determinants that negatively impact the obesity epidemic, describe the impact of obesity in children in South Carolina and be able to take concrete steps to participate in obesity prevention efforts both statewide and in their own local community.

In addition to IMPH, SCAPA and the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, this event is also supported by the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) and SCaleDown.org.
