  • Considering Sodium Intake Reduction Strategies in South Carolina

    The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health (IMPH), in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), brought together stakeholders to discuss and develop an informational brief entitled Considering Sodium Intake Reduction Strategies in South Carolina. The purpose of the brief is to increase awareness about the role of sodium intake in population health and encourage sodium reduction strategies in South Carolina.
  • IMPH to Develop a Health Policy Fellows Program for Elected Officials

    The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health (IMPH) has received collaborative funding from The Duke Endowment and Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina to enable the development of a health policy fellows program for members of the SC General Assembly. The combined $400,000 award will support the planning and initial offering of the fellows program over the next two years.
  • State Alliance for Adolescent Sexual Health Releases “Call to Action Resource Document”

    The State Alliance for Adolescent Sexual Health in South Carolina (SAASH) recently released a new report, the Call to Action Resource Document, which challenges school leaders, health care providers, policy makers and parents to work together to take immediate action to improve the sexual health and well-being of South Carolina’s youth. Dr. Lee Pearson, director of operations for IMPH, served on the committee which drafted the report.
  • A note of gratitude to our partners in the ACA Implementation Initiative

    In 2010, shortly after the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a conversation started in South Carolina to envision ways to improve health for everyone in our state. Under the banner of what was then the SC Public Health Institute, we invited stakeholders with varying interests and opinions to come together and begin the process of understanding the health care reform legislation. For the last two years, that conversation around reform has continued through nine workgroups focused on the key components of the Affordable Care Act.
  • IMPH Hosts Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Training Sponsored by the Piedmont Health Foundation

    The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health (IMPH) and the Piedmont Health Foundation convened stakeholders from Greenville area organizations on March 26, 2012 to provide training on the purpose and use of the health impact assessment (HIA) as a tool for incorporating health decisions into community decision making.
  • County Health Rankings & Roadmaps are Call to Action for SC Counties

    The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health (IMPH) is proud to partner with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute to promote the 2012 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps.
  • South Carolina Perspectives on a Health Insurance Exchange

    The South Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health (formerly the South Carolina Public Health Institute) conducted a focus group study among key constituencies to explore their perspectives on health insurance coverage, marketplace considerations and the type of exchange that South Carolina could have.
  • Advancing Health in South Carolina: A Summit of the ACA Implementation Initiative

    Ms. Sarah Thomas, Vice President, Public Policy & Communication at the National Committee for Quality Assurance, gave the Keynote presentation at the August 24, 2011 Advancing Health in South Carolina Summit of the ACA Implementation Initiative.
  • Presentation to SC Health Planning Committee

    On June 30, 2011, SCPHI presented and organized a panel to provide an overview of the context of health in South Carolina to the SC Health Planning Committee. The panelists, with links to copies of their presentations, are provided.
  • Annual Rankings Give South Carolina Counties Roadmap to Improve Health

    Beaufort County continues to have the healthiest residents in South Carolina and Lee County remains the least healthy county in the state, according to the annual County Health Rankings, released today by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. According to the Rankings, residents of Lee County are nearly two times more likely to die a premature death than those in Beaufort County.
